Construction Companies - Do you know your BIM from your RIM?

By gazza on Mon, 19/10/2015

Fewer than 1 in 6 firms (16%) in the building services sector are ‘fully ready’ to use Building Information Modelling (BIM) on projects, according to new survey findings from the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA).
Construction companies are not ready for BIM
With the government deadline for the mandatory use of ‘BIM Level 2’ in all Whitehall-procured contracts just months away, nearly 6 in 10 firms (57%) said they were not fully ready, while over 1 in 4 (27%) said they were ‘not ready at all’ (please see attached graph).

Milton Keynes Electrical Contractor calls for end to dodgy apprenticeships

By gazza on Mon, 05/10/2015

A local electrical contracting company based in Milton Keynes is backing Government plans to end low quality apprenticeships and bring advocates of low quality apprenticeships to justice. Low quality apprenticeships not only bring the good reputation of electricians and the industry to it's knees but also affect the career progression of those affected.
Maintaining high standards of apprenticeships and training courses is the only way to ensure the electrical industry attracts the best candidates and thus addressing the impending skills gap crisis.

Thousands of Jobs at Risk over FiT Tariff Cuts

By gazza on Mon, 21/09/2015

Proposed cuts of 87% to the Feed in Tariff (FiT) proposed by the Government in January 2016 could put thousands of jobs at risk in the renewables sector.
If the cuts go ahead, home owners investing in renewable energy could wait decades for a viable return on their investment thus cutting the fledgling renewables industry apart. FiT payments per unit of electricity produced would drop to less than 2p with property owners receiving approximately £190 less than what they currently receive at the present FiT rates.
NICEIC & ELECSA share grave concerns

Why you should always use fire rated downlights

By gazza on Tue, 08/09/2015

If you are upgrading the lighting anywhere in your home to downlights you may have been asked this age old question.....”do you want fire rated or non-fire rated downlights?” To the average home owner this question will be pretty meaningless apart from the fact that fire rated sounds better than non-fire rated possibly.
However, the difference between the two is stark and in fact opting for the wrong type of downlight could cost a life – this is why it is important to beware of the difference between the two before answering the question.
What is a fire rated downlight?
