Low quality apprenticeships not only bring the good reputation of electricians and the industry to it's knees but also affect the career progression of those affected.<br /> Maintaining high standards of apprenticeships and training courses is the only way to ensure the electrical industry attracts the best candidates and thus addressing the impending skills gap crisis.<br /> Attracting both good businesses and candidates to the electrical industry<br /> In the last budget, the Government announced plans to refresh the apprenticeship scheme so it becomes a viable career option for school leavers. Reputable employers who offer apprenticeship positions not only offer top class training but also often find that the apprentices stay with the company after training – this saves recruiting candidates who may have been trained differently – or worse still, finding that they have not had the correct level of training for the job.<br /> Unfortunately apprenticeships have not been taken seriously by all employers some of whom see apprentices as a cheap labour option and therefore do not provide apprentices with the necessary skills and training required to carry out electrical work competently.<br /> The Department for Business, Innovation &amp; Skills have indicated that in the future, anyone offering fake or low-quality apprenticeships training could face the possibility of a fine and prosecution in a Magistrates Court. The government is committed to giving apprenticeships similar controls to university degrees.<br /> "Everyone knows what a university degree means," said Skills Minister Nick Boles.<br /> "It's an official title. Young people doing apprenticeships should get the same level of distinction."<br /> SJD Electrical calling for change<br /> Fed up with the number of job applicants without the correct training or skills prompted Milton Keynes based SJD Electrical to make their voice heard in support of Government plans to crack down on electrical training that does not meet Government standards.<br /> Ruth Devine, Director at SJD Electrical said:<br /> “Protecting the term ‘apprenticeship’ will help us attract the most able individuals and offer a guarantee to apprentices that they will receive world-class training.<br /> A number of applicants applying for jobs at SJD who thought they had completed apprenticeships, were surprised to find that they were not fully qualified. Low quality training courses contribute to the many instances of poor workmanship we come across.”<br /> Apprentices should be assured of receiving a recognised qualification and skill set which will enable them to carry out electrical work to the required standard and allow them to progress effectively. Apprentices should not be applying for jobs to find they have wasted their time undertaking their apprenticeship and having to redo it.<br /> By cracking down on unscrupulous employers, apprenticeships will return to the enviable reputation they once had which enabled apprentices to obtain a skill for life and be assured of a skill that in the future they can also pass down.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-blog-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Blog tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/blog-category/apprentice-electrician" hreflang="en">apprentice electrician</a></div> </div> </div> Sun, 04 Oct 2015 23:00:00 +0000 gazza 465 at https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk Major Flaw Identified in new Safety Regulations https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk/blogs/gazza/tue-29092015-0000/major-flaw-identified-new-safety-regulations <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Major Flaw Identified in new Safety Regulations</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="images-container clearfix"> <div class="image-preview clearfix"> <div class="image-wrapper clearfix"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="overlay-container"> <span class="overlay overlay--colored"> <a class="overlay-target-link image-popup" href="/sites/default/files/alarm.JPG"></a> </span> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/mt_large/public/alarm.JPG?itok=xhjCwL-p" width="1350" height="730" class="image-style-mt-large" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/1" class="username">gazza</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2015-09-29T00:00:00+01:00" title="Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - 00:00" class="datetime">Tue, 29/09/2015</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>New safety regulations for the Private Rented Sector (PRS) which are due to come into force on October 1st 2015 have a major flaw according to the electrical safety charity Electrical Safety First.<br /> The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Regulations (England) 2015<br /> From October 1st, landlords in the PRS will be required to provide a working smoke alarm for every floor of their property as well as a CO detector. Unfortunately there has been no mention of electrical safety as part of these new regulations sparking concern that both tenants and landlords will under estimate the importance of maintaining a high standard of electrical safety in rented accommodation. This is despite parliamentary support to include electrical safety within the regulations.<br /> “While we applaud any safety improvements for the PRS, we have been extremely disappointed that electrical safety has not been included in these new regulations”, explains Phil Buckle, Director General of Electrical Safety First.<br />  “It is quite extraordinary that this has been overlooked, given that electricity is responsible for almost half of all domestic fires in Great Britain – with an estimated cost of £1Billion.  The human cost is, of course, incalculable but we do know electricity kills one person a week and seriously injuries around 350,000 each year.<br />  <br /> “Given the huge expansion in the PRS, where a third of properties fail to meet basic standards, concerns around electrical safety can only increase. So we were deeply concerned when our call for regular electrical checks in privately rented accommodation was omitted from these new regulations.”<br /> Reinforcing the electricity kills message<br /> Electrical Safety First has been campaigning for better electrical standards in rented accommodation after identifying that tenants renting in the private sector were at higher risk of being injured or killed by electrical shock, injury or electrical fire than any other housing sector. This is often because of confusion on either the landlord or tenants side over who has responsibility for what in rented property.<br /> Electrical Safety First are campaigning for mandatory electrical safety checks to be carried out in rental properties at least once every 5 years. This has been successfully introduced in Scotland with high hopes that this could be extended across England and Wales in the near future.<br /> How the new law will affect tenants<br /> Tenants renting in the private sector should be provided with a working, fitted smoke alarm on every floor of the property as well as a CO detector if the property has solid fuel appliances such as a coal boiler, open fire or log burner.<br /> It will be the tenants responsibility to ensure they continue to be in working order by testing them regularly.<br /> It is hoped that the introduction of the new Regulations will raise standards amongst PRS accommodation.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-blog-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Blog tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/blog-category/smoke-alarms" hreflang="en">smoke alarms</a></div> </div> </div> Mon, 28 Sep 2015 23:00:00 +0000 gazza 466 at https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk Thousands of Jobs at Risk over FiT Tariff Cuts https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk/blogs/gazza/mon-21092015-0000/thousands-jobs-risk-over-fit-tariff-cuts <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Thousands of Jobs at Risk over FiT Tariff Cuts</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="images-container clearfix"> <div class="image-preview clearfix"> <div class="image-wrapper clearfix"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="overlay-container"> <span class="overlay overlay--colored"> <a class="overlay-target-link image-popup" href="/sites/default/files/DECC_image.jpg"></a> </span> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/mt_large/public/DECC_image.jpg?itok=FVaG5ZEA" width="1350" height="730" class="image-style-mt-large" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/1" class="username">gazza</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2015-09-21T00:00:00+01:00" title="Monday, September 21, 2015 - 00:00" class="datetime">Mon, 21/09/2015</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Proposed cuts of 87% to the Feed in Tariff (FiT) proposed by the Government in January 2016 could put thousands of jobs at risk in the renewables sector.<br /> If the cuts go ahead, home owners investing in renewable energy could wait decades for a viable return on their investment thus cutting the fledgling renewables industry apart. FiT payments per unit of electricity produced would drop to less than 2p with property owners receiving approximately £190 less than what they currently receive at the present FiT rates.<br /> NICEIC &amp; ELECSA share grave concerns<br /> The electrical certification scheme providers NICEIC and ELECSA both share concerns that should the cuts be introduced in January 2016, demand for renewable energy installation will nose dive leaving many people working in the industry at risk of losing their job.<br /> Dani Putney, renewables specialist at NICEIC and ELECSA commented: “It has always been accepted that the tariff would need to be revised in line with falling installation costs, but at the proposed rates home owners would have to wait decades before they would see a viable return on investment.<br /> “To suddenly pull the plug on funding in such a drastic manner could have a dramatic, negative effect on the market and potentially put thousands of jobs at risk.<br /> “The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has admitted they are unable to quantify how many business will be affected.<br /> “We would urge all those working in the sector to respond to the consultation and voice their concerns about the potential impact of this decision.”<br /> “We believe there are some alternatives the Government could consider to safeguard the long-term future of the industry. We will be consulting with our members on the best options going forward before making our official response to Government.”<br /> Why are the cuts necessary?<br /> The cut in the FiT tariff is the result of the need to halt a £1.5 billion overspend on renewables according to the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC.) There have also been suggestions that the FiT subsidy could be halted entirely if costs cannot be controlled.<br /> The FiT scheme is due to be phased out in 2018-19, however the Government have suggested that if the scheme cannot be placed on an affordable and sustainable footing, then the scheme will be brought to an end as soon as legislatively possible. There is an open Governmental consultation open until the 23rd October 2015 with responses invited via online survey.<br /> People working in the renewables sector directly and the associated industries can visit the consultation page at the DECC website.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-blog-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Blog tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/blog-category/renewables" hreflang="en">renewables</a></div> </div> </div> Sun, 20 Sep 2015 23:00:00 +0000 gazza 467 at https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk Grab your copy of James Dewanes NEW book - Marketing for Local Trades– for FREE!! https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk/blogs/gazza/mon-14092015-0000/grab-your-copy-james-dewanes-new-book-marketing-local-trades%E2%80%93-free <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Grab your copy of James Dewanes NEW book - Marketing for Local Trades– for FREE!!</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="images-container clearfix"> <div class="image-preview clearfix"> <div class="image-wrapper clearfix"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="overlay-container"> <span class="overlay overlay--colored"> <a class="overlay-target-link image-popup" href="/sites/default/files/sparks_blueprint_book.png"></a> </span> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/mt_large/public/sparks_blueprint_book.png?itok=YurX8R0X" width="1350" height="730" class="image-style-mt-large" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/1" class="username">gazza</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2015-09-14T00:00:00+01:00" title="Monday, September 14, 2015 - 00:00" class="datetime">Mon, 14/09/2015</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Yes you heard correctly - James Dewane, founder of the highly acclaimed My Electricians ToolBox has just published his FIRST book dedicated to the SPARKS Blueprint which is an exclusive framework James teaches to members of My Electricians ToolBox. An intumescent pad swells up when reaching certain temperatures which blocks the spread of fire. Without this protection in place, the fire simply comes through the hole and ignites quicker than ever as there is no fire protection in place.<br /> When downlights are installed, a hole is cut into your ceiling. Ceilings are a natural fire barrier – but they must be intact for this barrier to be effective. Cutting a hole into your ceiling is like an open door inviting the fire to spread quickly to the floor below. Fitting a fire rated downlight effectively seals this hole for varying lengths of time to prevent the fire spreading.<br /> The rule of thumb is: The ceiling must be returned to the same level of integrity as it was before the downlights were installed. Your fire safety should not be compromised by having downlights installed.<br /> Listen up all you users of non-fire rated downlights!<br /> If the rooms above are habited then it is very highly recommended that you only use fire rated downlights. When we mean habited rooms this is any room which is accessible by people – so it could be anything from the flat above yours to the attic which is only accessed now and then.<br /> If are installing downlights in a one storey building then fire rated downlights are not such a necessity – but to be honest, why take the risk? If a fire breaks out, vital time could be lost and could be the difference between escaping the fire or being burnt to a crisp. The electrical safety charity, Electrical Safety First campaign for all downlight installations to be fire rated.<br /> If you currently have non-fire rated downlights installed (an electrician can advise on this) they can be converted to fire rated by fitting a fire hood or loft cap. However, when the cost of converting is compared with the cost of fitting the latest technology, it may make sense to replace the whole light fitting.<br /> What does 'fire rated' actually mean?<br /> Having opted for fire rated downlights – you will then see that the downlight will protect you from fire for varying lengths of time mainly 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Which rating you opt for will depend on the type of building they will be installed in - in particular, how many floors the building has and the type of structure the downlights are being installed in. As a simple example, if the downlights are being installed in the ceiling in the bottom floor of house, then 30 or 60 minutes would normally be recommended. The top floor of a block of flats would need considerably longer ratings of 90 or even 120 minutes of fire rating.<br /> The Aurora clearance range of downlights offers all the features you would expect from a fire rated downlight. However, it is not just the fire that Aurora lighting consider, it is the prevention of fire in the first place. Heat build up from downlights can lead to house fire, however the increased ventilation slots allow heat to be effectively dissipated.<br /> Another common problem with downlights is insulation. Increased insulation in loft spaces has lead to spotlights overheating when insulation has been laid incorrectly around downlight fittings leading to overheating and fire. A fitted insulation cap on Aurora clearance spotlights allows the spotlight to the IC rated meaning it can be covered with insulation material if necessary without performance being affected.<br /> A qualified and registered electrician would recommend the most suitable fire rated downlight for your particular needs.<br /> Look out for lamp flexibility<br /> Although fire safety consideration should be top of the list in any spotlight fitting selection, buyers also need to look for lamp flexibility. Naturally at Aurora clearance many of the fire rated downlights can be fitted with the latest LED lamps, however householders who are looking for a cheaper solution can also fit any bulb technology they desire – for example halogen or CFL. Long or standard length lamps can be fitted. The Aurora Aone lamp is a good starting choice and provides excellent all round light quality.<br /> The idea is user friendly for both the electrician and the user. Complicated products simply push up installation prices, something that home owners and specifiers want to avoid.<br /> Finally don't forget the certification!<br /> The fitting of downlights is governed by Part P building regulations. Whoever is installing your downlight must work to these regulations and provide a Part P certificate on completion of the work. If no Part P certificate is supplied not only is the work illegal but crucially you could be putting you and your family at risk of electrical shock, injury or even house fire – the situation you are trying to avoid!<br /> Fire rated downlights will only be effective if they are installed correctly meeting the latest electrical regulations and used in line with manufacturers instructions.<br /> For more information and to purchase fire rated downlights, please visit the Aurora clearance website </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-blog-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Blog tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/blog-category/fire-rated-downlights" hreflang="en">Fire rated downlights</a></div> </div> </div> Mon, 07 Sep 2015 23:00:00 +0000 gazza 469 at https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk TrustMark Extends Certification to Stroma Registered Electricians https://www.mylocalelectrician.uk/blogs/gazza/mon-07092015-0000/trustmark-extends-certification-stroma-registered-electricians <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">TrustMark Extends Certification to Stroma Registered Electricians</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="images-container clearfix"> <div class="image-preview clearfix"> <div class="image-wrapper clearfix"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="overlay-container"> <span class="overlay overlay--colored"> <a class="overlay-target-link image-popup" href="/sites/default/files/Trustmark_Logo_1.jpg"></a> </span> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/mt_large/public/Trustmark_Logo_1.jpg?itok=Ht4i8-ts" width="1350" height="730" class="image-style-mt-large" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/1" class="username">gazza</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2015-09-07T00:00:00+01:00" title="Monday, September 7, 2015 - 00:00" class="datetime">Mon, 07/09/2015</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>A partnership agreed in July 2015 between Stroma and TrustMark now allows Stroma registered electricians to gain TrustMark status which will help home-owners select competent qualified electricians and other trades people to carry out work in their homes.
